Fish oil boosts memory function by 15 per cent

Including oily fish like salmon and trout in one’s diet can significantly improve memory by almost 15 percent and help prevent the onset of dementia, a new study has found.

Welma Stonehouse and her team from the Massey University in New Zealand gave supplements containing DHA, an Omega-3 fatty acid found in foods such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout, prawns and mussels, to 176 healthy adults over a period of six months.

During this time memory and cognitive function were assessed and compared to a placebo group.

After treatment, memory, working memory and speed of working memory all showed significant improvements.

It is believed that DHA could be key in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, one of the most common forms of dementia, characterised by a decline in mental abilities, such as memory and reasoning and often associated with increasing age.

“This is the first robust study to show that a DHA-rich supplement can improve some aspects of memory functioning in young healthy adults,” the Daily Mail quoted Stonehouse as saying.

“The cognitive functions shown to be affected by the DHA-rich fish oil, namely memory and working memory, are among the most important functions of our brains for numerous everyday activities, such as working, driving, shopping, studying, playing sports, etc.

“Maintaining brain health and getting your brain to perform at its optimal capacity is just as vital as maintaining physical wellbeing and health,” she said.

DHA, is one of the most highly concentrated fats in the brain and known to play a vital role in the structure and functioning of the brain, but as the body cannot effectively make this fatty acid it must be consumed as part of the diet.

The researchers also highlighted that as many people fail to eat enough fish and seafood, the brain’s performance is potentially compromised.

The study showed that male participants who took a DHA supplement demonstrated 15 percent faster working memory while women had a seven percent improvement in the speed of episodic memory.

“These findings contribute to the growing body of research showing that omega-3’s play a very important role in brain function throughout the life cycle, even in healthy cognitively intact individuals,” she added. (ANI)

Why pregnant moms should refrain from high street coffee

Pregnant mothers should avoid consuming coffee from high street cafes as they contain more caffeine than recommended levels, researchers say.

The soon-to-be mothers inadvertently put the health of their unborn babies at risk by drinking coffee from such cafes.

The researchers analysed espressos from 20 coffee shops and found that there were huge variations in the amount of caffeine they contain - with the strongest having more than six times as much as the weakest.

The most worrying part was that the strongest example contained over 50 per cent more caffeine in a single cup than a pregnant woman is advised to take over the course of an entire day.

Fears about birth defects, miscarriage and premature delivery imply that pregnant women are advised to limit themselves to 200mg of caffeine a day.

This is generally equivalent to four cups of strong coffee, expected to contain 50mg of caffeine each.

But only one of the 20 coffees studied – the one from Starbucks – contained around this amount. All of the others were stronger, the Daily Mail reported.

According to the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Food and Function, four had more than 200mg in a single cup, with the strongest having more than 300mg.

Researcher Alan Crozier said that caffeine, which crosses the placenta to the unborn baby, usually takes five hours to break down in the body to half its previous level.

“There is clearly a problem. People at risk could unwittingly ingest far more caffeine than they would ever dream of,” he said.

But the process can take up to 30 hours in certain groups, including children, liver disease sufferers and pregnant women.

An unborn baby’s liver will struggle to break down caffeine, with potential long-term consequences. (ANI)

New antibodies give 100pc protection to mice against HIV infection

Scientists have developed a way of delivering broadly neutralizing antibodies in mice, and in doing so, have effectively protected them from HIV infection.

Over the past year, researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and around the world, have been studying a group of potent antibodies that have the ability to neutralize HIV in the lab, and their hope is that they may learn how to create a vaccine that makes antibodies with similar properties.

Now, biologists at Caltech led by Nobel Laureate David Baltimore, president emeritus and Robert Andrews Millikan Professor of Biology, have taken one step closer to that goal and have developed a new approach to HUIV prevention, called Vectored ImmunoProphylaxis or VIP.

Traditional efforts to develop a vaccine against HIV have been centered on designing substances that provoke an effective immune response, either in the form of antibodies to block infection or T cells that attack infected cells. With VIP, protective antibodies are being provided up front.

“VIP has a similar effect to a vaccine, but without ever calling on the immune system to do any of the work,” Alejandro Balazs, lead author of the study, said.

“Normally, you put an antigen or killed bacteria or something into the body, and the immune system figures out how to make an antibody against it. We’ve taken that whole part out of the equation,” he said.

Since mice are not sensitive to HIV, the researchers used specialized mice carrying human immune cells that are able to grow HIV. They utilized an adeno-associated virus (AAV), a small, harmless virus that has been useful in gene-therapy trials, as a carrier to deliver genes that are able to specify antibody production.

The AAV was injected into the leg muscle of mice, and the muscle cells then put broadly neutralizing antibodies into the animals’ circulatory systems.

Researchers found that the treated mice in the study appeared to have 100 percent protection against HIV.

It was also found that after just a single AAV injection, the mice produced high concentrations of these antibodies for the rest of their lives, as shown by intermittent sampling of their blood. Remarkably, these antibodies protected the mice from infection when the researchers exposed them to HIV intravenously.

According to the researchers, the leap from mice to humans is large, and the fact that the approach works in mice does not necessarily mean it will be successful in humans.

Still, the researchers believe that the large amounts of antibodies that the mice were able to produce, coupled with the finding that a relatively small amount of antibody has proved protective in the mice, may translate into human protection against HIV infection.

“We’re not promising that we’ve actually solved the human problem,” he said.

“But the evidence for prevention in these mice is very clear,” Baltimore added.

The study has been published in the journal Nature. (ANI)

Kingfisher in talks with domestic investor, says Mallya

Vijay Mallya, the head of the UB group that owns Kingfisher Airlines has said that he is holding talks with a domestic investor to infuse cash into the troubled airline.

He also said that the company will consider importing Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) directly in order to reduce costs. He urged the authorities to allow foreign airlines to invest in Indian aviation companies with an upper limit of 49 per cent.

Earlier report had suggested that Reliance is considering a financial investment or might buy a stake through a preferential offer by the cash-strapped airlines. The report said that Reliance has approached a merchant banker to carry out due diligence of the carrier. However, RIL had rubbished the claims saying it has not such plans to invest in Kingfisher.

Kingfisher, India's second biggest airlines, is believed to be unable to raise money from the capital or debt market and it is becoming increasing difficult for the company to pay for fuel for its flights. Company staff has been dwindling as employees had lost faith in the airlines future. The airline had delayed making salary payments for August and September upsetting many employees and making them think about leaving their jobs.

Kingfisher is also facing severe fuel shortages as it has been available to pay its fuel bills. Hindustan Petroleum had suspended fuel supply to the airline causing disruptions as the airline was not able to pay a bill of Rs 130 crore.

Mallya had earlier hinted that he is in talks with an unnamed wealthy Indian individual for a $250 million equity injection besides a $370 million deal with 14 banks led by State Bank of India through which the cash-strapped airline will get a working capital of 6 billion rupees ($118 million).

i don't find her as beautiful. Kareena is good, but not the best. Katrina Kaif is good looking and has a very sweet and innocent face.

i like Genelia ( i am wondering why she is interested in Deshmukh though)

I like Asin as well. I like Vidya Balan. Vidya Balan is older than most of these girls, but she is surely sexy. Waiting to see what comes in Dirty Picture.

Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday achieved another milestone as he became the first cricketer in the history of the game to cross 15000 runs mark in Test cricket.

Playing in his 182nd match, Tendulkar reached the mark on the third day of the first Test against the West Indies when he scored his 28th run in India's second innings with a single off leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo.

After crossing the coveted milestone, the batting maestro looked up at the heavens and acknowledged the standing ovation given by his teammates from the dressing room as his partner Rahul Dravid congratulated him.

The West Indian players also came up after the completion of the over to congratulate the iconic batsman.

Tendulkar was 35 runs short of 15,000 before this match and he scored seven in the first innings before being adjidged leg-before off Fidel Edwards.

With 14,422 crowd cheering him, Tendulkar, who came in at the fall of Virender Sehwag's wicket when the team total was 95 for two, played cautiously with India needing 276 runs to win the match.

He hit just two fours after facing 76 balls to reach 28. The 38-year-old Tendulkar, the world's most prolific batsman, now needs just one hundred to complete a historic 100 international tons. He has scored 51 Test tons and 48 ODI hundreds.

Rahul Dravid, who was batting at the other end with Tendulkar, is the second highest run-getter in Tests with 12,775 runs before this match while Australian Ricky Ponting is third on the list with 12487 runs.

All eyes are on the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, as the Indian F1 Grand Prix makes its debut with practice sessions on Friday.
Some of the world's top F1 drivers, such as Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button, are participating in the three-day event.
The world's top Formula 1 teams -- RBR-Renault, McLaren-Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari -- are competing, and so is India's Force One.
Schumacher, who made a surprise return to the competitive racing by signing a three-year contract with the Mercedes GP team in 2010, feels the F1 title should be fought across the world and India is a valuable addition on the map.
The 43-year-old is statistically the greatest driver to have sat in the F1 cockpit. But he has not even managed a podium since his comeback last year.
The challenges of an unknown track and dramatic turns and changes in elevation make it an exciting prospect for the 24 drivers who will speed down the 5.14 km Buddh International Circuit.
Schumacher is confident he will rise to the unknown challenges of the newly unveiled race track. "A new track is always a highlight of the Formula 1... I hope for lots of support, lots of crossed-fingers," he said.
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa said that the track presented unique challenges and it would be interesting to see how it responds.
"I am enjoying my time in India. The hairpins seem quite unique as they are very wide. You can actually choose two racing lines and there would be a lot of opportunities of overtaking. So it will be a good race," he said.
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button said on Thursday they want to win the inaugural Indian Grand Prix so that they can make a strong start next season.
Narain Karthikeyan of Hispania Racing, the only Indian driver competing in the race, might not be a serious contender. But India's first ever F1 driver is hopeful of living up to the expectations.
"It is going to be the happiest moment in my life and what better than to drive in front of your home crowd," Karthikeyen said.
"It's a historic day to be an Indian driving at the Indian GP. But realistically, we are just hoping that both the cars manage to finish the race. However, the first few laps are going to be really special for me. There are many fans in India who are excited about the race. Unlike China, there are many F1 fans in India," Karthikeyan said.
Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is excited about the Indian Grand Prix. "It's an incredible feeling. Being a motor sport fan, I always wanted GP to take place in India and wonderful for all the Indians who actually go there and witness F1 race. I am rooting for Force India. First comes India, then the rest. I have, as a driver, always liked Michael Schumacher, but when India is participating, it's India first," Tendulkar said in a TV interview.

Bollywood biker John Abraham will be seen riding his own machine in his forthcoming comedy film, ‘Desi Boyz’.

It is said that there is a particular scene in the movie where the actor had to ride a bike.

The film producers- Rohit Dhawan and Krishika Lulla- were making plans to get him one but then the actor said that he could use his private motorcycle.

So, Rohit Dhawan shipped John’s motorbike from Mumbai to London.

As a result, the scene was shot with John riding his Yamaha V-Max.

John was said to be very happy about it and gave thanks to the film makers for making all the arrangements.

John will be seen with Akki and two hotties including Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Singh in a romcom ‘Desi Boyz’.

It will hit theatres on Nov 25, 2011.

By the way, Akshay and John seem to have taken the title of their next flick, Desi Boyz, a little too seriously.

Akki (mid-40s) and John drawing close to 40, are playing roles at least a decade younger in the comedy film.

While Aamir shone at donning the role of a college student in ‘3 Idiots’, even though he is in his 40s, the more matured appearence of Akki and John need lots of work to look persuasively younger.

Anyway, Deepika Padukone, 25, is fine though Chitrangda Singh, 35, may create a trouble.

In October 30, 2011 Greater Noida on Formula One Race circuit..Wow!!

It's official. India will host its first Formula 1 Grand Prix on October 30, 2011. The announcement came following an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Paris on Wednesday. The addition of an Indian GP to the F1 calendar will make 2011 a 20-race season, the longest in the history of the sport. According to FIA deadlines, the track needs to be completed by July 30 and it will get a go-ahead subject to FIA homologation.

The 5.14-km track, located on the outskirts of Greater Noida (35km from Delhi) is being built by Noida-based Jaypee Sports International (JPSI) and is designed by German racetrack designer Hermann Tilke, who has designed F1 circuits in Malaysia, Bahrain, China, Turkey, UAE and South Korea.

According to Mark Hughes, vice-president (operations) of JPSI, the track will be among the top five in the world as far as average speed is concerned. The average time per lap is expected to be around 1 minute 24 seconds. The track will have straights, quick corners and elevation changes. Hughes assured that the track would be ready by May 31.

FIA delegates will then inspect the safety conditions of the circuit along with the nature of the track surface. The track, which is being built at a cost of $350 million, will have a spectator capacity of 1-1.2 lakh and won't be restricted to Formula 1 races. It's being built to accommodate MotoGP and Superbike races as well.

Indian F1 driver Karun Chandhok said the announcement will provide a major boost to Indian motorsports. "With the Indian GP, more people in India will have access to not only F1 but motorsports in general. For me personally, it will be thrilling to be on the grid and hear the Indian national anthem before the start of the Grand Prix."

"I am very happy and excited by the announcement. To have an Indian team on an Indian circuit will be a treat for home fans. This will also ensure participation of the automotive sector in motorsports," Karthikeyan said.

According to Hughes, ticket prices will be affordable and have different grades. Tickets will go on sale from January next year.

Among the various features of the track is the main grandstand that can seat 30,000 people.

"It's a monumental task, and work is under way at a staggering pace. Hold on to your holiday programmes for next year, for Greater Noida might just be the place to visit in October for an adrenaline-induced weekend," said Hughes.

Formula One motor racing will arrive in India in 2010. Delhi-based infrastructure major JP Associates has won an
exclusive 10-year contract to host the premier race in Greater Noida.

Manoj Gaur, managing director of JP Associates, confirmed this to the Hindustan Times and added that his group signed the agreement with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone last week. He refused to divulge details of the deal.

The race track, to be developed by the JP group, will be near the proposed Greater Noida airport about 50 km from Delhi. The Noida authority has already given in-principle approval for the site, sources said. The Rs 1,500-crore project will be spread over around 350 acres land.

Enthusiasm in FI has been the on the rise in India ever since Narain Karthikeyan debuted at the FI circuit for Team Jordan. On Tuesday, another young star, Karun Chandhok, tested for Red Bull at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

San Francisco, Sep 28 - Apple Inc looks set to introduce its iPhone 5 at a special event next week.

The invitation-only event will be held Oct 4 at Apple campus in Cupertino, California, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

This could be the first big product launch by the newly installed chief executive officer Tim Cook after he took over the reins of Apple from Steve Jobs in August.

According to US media reports, the iPhone 5 is expected to have a larger screen, a higher resolution camera and a faster dual-core A5 chip on which the iPad 2 runs.

Apple is also reported to release a low-cost and contract- free iPhone model bundled with its cloud computing service iCloud. (IANS)

"When I started making this film it was a very expensive proposition but I thank all our partners not for the money that they have put in but for the belief that they have shown towards this film. And to recover the money the film will have to do business that has never been done before. The business exists...the return exists," he said.

Technology giant, Apple might hold a media event on 4 October to reveal the next generation of its iPhone smartphone, the iPhone 5, which will then hit the market ten days later on 14 October according to reports.

An AllThingsD reports that Apple has selected the Town Hall Auditorium for the launch. The venue is surprisingly smaller than the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where the iPhone 4 was launched.

Well-known ghazal singer Jagjit Singh continues to be serious in the Lilavati Hospital, where he was admitted and had surgical operation on Friday.

Big B suffered a hairline rib fracture while shooting for Ram Gopal Varma's forthcoming flick 'Department'.

As per reports, while the Bollywood mega star tried his hands at an action series in the movie, he got injury causing a fracture.

Mr. Bachchan plays a small character in Ram Gopal Varma's 'Department' and while shooting for an action series, he got hit by the elbow joint of a security during the shot.

Big B’s doctor advised him to go for a scan.

After having shot a song sequence next day, Big B went in for an X-Ray and doctors identified a hairline fracture in his rib.

While talking on the incident, the actor expressed to his buffs through his blog, "There is a fracture in the rib, albeit hairline; it cannot be given any treatment, for such ailments are left to heal on their own... That takes care of the next 3-4 weeks because that is the recognized healing period. Bear the pain and that is it... Damn!"

The physicians have showed that the rupture is a mild one and will mend in about a period of one month.
